Poor lonesome poets, Alberto Pimenta and the Usefulness of Poetry Abstract This article aims to analyze Alberto Pimenta’s reflection on the place that poets occupy in contemporary society, stemming from the close reading of the last poem of Autocataclismos (2014), where we find the following lines: “los poetas son útiles / hacen versos / poor lonesome poets.” This poem will thus become a pretext to discuss the usefulness of poets in the republic, an aspect Pimenta addresses several times in poems, essays and interviews. The analysis of this poem will also convene other texts, namely Adorno’s lecture, “Rede über Lyrik und Gesellschaft” –“On Lyric Poetry and Society”–, a fundamental text to understand Alberto Pimenta’s political art. • This article aims to examine Jorge de Sena’s understanding of poetry translation and the criteria that govern his activity as a translator. Based on a detailed analysis of the various reflections that his translation-based activities motivated, be it as a translator of verse or as a voracious reader of poetry, we try to show how the understanding of his craft as a translator is crucial to the understanding of his poetic project. We argue that the Senian theory on translation, inseparable from the general conception of his entire work, tends to reject strangeness and to favour fidelity, often understood as naturalization of the translated poem.
